#DS321Challenge {March Challenge: Athletes for Down Syndrome Awareness}

It is time to hear all about the challenge for March! If you haven't caught on I am going to run a challenge each month. In January we had the Fresh Start Challenge, February was the Eat in Challenge and for March I am SO EXCITED to be partnering with TeamT21 for an Exercise challenge!  This Challenge has a dual purpose getting fit and helping bring awareness about Down Syndrome!

What is even more special about this challenge is the TeamT21 is a new non-profit that was started by my Sister and her husband for my niece. Their story is inspiring and I can't wait to help support them.
So lets show them some love and accept this challenge!
Steph is here to introduce you and tell you how to participate in the challenge plus how you can choose to win the GRAND PRIZE of a free entry into the Discovery Station Super Hero Race!
World Down Syndrome Day is March 21st, chosen because of the significance of the third copy of the 21st chromosome. This is the 11th year that #WDSD will hold events and celebrations for those who have the genetic disorder.
People with Down Syndrome are just like you and me. They are a vital part to our society and World Down Syndrome Day is used to help advocate for their inclusion into the community. “Preparing today’s children for life as tomorrow’s adults!” We want to give children with DS support to turn into independent, confident adults!
My husband, Kyle, and I created Team T21 after our daughter was born in August 2014. At birth, Emilee was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Throughout the next year we realized that people didn’t fully understand the intellectual and physical abilities of individuals with Down Syndrome.

Why Team T21?
Being healthy and exercising has always been an important aspect of our lives. Kyle and I were both active throughout high school on sports teams. After Emilee’s birth we were overwhelmed between doctors appointments, therapies and understanding how our lives were changing. One day I dressed in running gear and said “I’m going for a run”. This spurred training for my first race, which lead to my first half marathon, and now for a few 5k’s and my next half marathon in April. Kyle has always found some peace in running and continues to train and complete races. When we run races, we are running with some of the strongest people in the world. There is nothing easy about completing 26.2 miles, 13.1 miles, 15K, 10k, or a 5k, even if you have trained. There will always be a mental wall that hits you, but you have the support of those around you, the family and friends cheering you on along the way…….. this is why we created TEAM T21. We want individuals with Down Syndrome to know that we are a team in this race of life and with the support of everyone around them, we can cross the finish line together!
What is #DS321Challenge?
The #DS321Challenge is to complete 321 minutes of exercise throughout the month of March. What kind of exercise??? ANY! You can run, walk, yoga, pilate, zumba, dance, golf your way to 321 minutes! Beginning March 1st at 12:01am and ending March 31st at 11:59pm we are asking that any posts or photos that you make on social media is tagged with the #DS321Challenge. We hope this will raise awareness about Down Syndrome and begin to promotes social inclusion of all people!
We have two options for participation with the challenge:
Option 1: Pay a $5 registration fee and be entered to win a grand prize. The grand prize is a free entry into the Discovery Station's Superhero 5k run or 1 mile walk held on May 7. However, we know some people have plans that day OR they may live too far away. This is not a problem. We will pay for entry fee into a race near you, or on a better day (up to $30 in entry fees). Please keep tagging posts with the #DS321Challenge!
Option 2: Participate for FREE! We are asking that you still register so that we can keep track of all participants and so that you can receive updates along the way! This option you will not be entered into the raffle.
